~ "Never give up on someone with a mental illness. When "I" is replaced by "We" illness becomes wellness!" ~
A beautiful quote by Shannon L. Alder
In the past, mental health issues were often seen as a source of embarrassment, and many were reluctant to acknowledge their struggles due to the stigma and the belief that they would not be understood. Fortunately, the topic of mental health is receiving more attention. Discussing a subject more openly can make it less taboo and contribute to breaking down the associated stigma.
In the US over 59.3 million people lives with a mental illness. This includes 5% of adults with severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bi-polar and major depression! Over 1 in 5 youth (ages 13-18) have had a seriously debilitating mental illness at point in their life!
It's disheartening to learn that in 2022, 4.58% of US adults had serious thoughts of suicide, and 13% of youths aged 12-17 experienced similar thoughts. Mental illnesses vary in severity from mild to severe. Regrettably, a significant number of Americans do not have equal insurance coverage for mental health, which can lead to substantial costs.
Women are three times more likely to encounter mental health issues than men. Depression ranks as the most frequently diagnosed mental health disorder. It impacts over 300 million individuals globally, with a higher prevalence among women compared to men.
Depression is indeed a real struggle and can be incredibly challenging. I've faced it myself after my mother's passing and still encounter difficult days, but I'll share more about my personal experiences on at another time.
